What is the project?
The Mayflower Kindergarten offers English-medium education for
Hungarian and Romanian children between the ages of three and
seven.
Where is the project implemented?
The Mayflower Kindergarten is based in the town of Covasna (near
Brasov) in central Romania. Covasna has a predominantly
Hungarian-speaking population.
What is the project s background?
The Mayflower Kindergarten was opened in 2001. At present it
has two permanent teachers and sixteen students. The curriculum is
based on an American pre-school model. The successful integration
of Hungarian and Romanian children in class is uncommon in the
region as there is a history of conflict between Hungarian and
Romanian speakers.
What does the project include?
Recently, the kindergarten completed the construction of three
classrooms to accommodate future growth. Plans include greater
involvement with mothers of students and increasing the number of
students attending.
How is BASED-UK involved?
BASED-UK awarded the Mayflower Kindergarten a one-off grant to
complete one of the classrooms.
